Do we like Brendan Murphy?
Our score: 6 out of 10. Nothing harmful found and nothing much on the good-deeds side either, so he lands in the middle on too little evidence.
Brendan Murphy is a Gaelic football midfielder who has been a fixture of Carlow's senior panel for years. He is not a household name outside the GAA, so the coverage is almost all sports pages: selections, suspensions and the odd comeback.
His story is one of coming and going. By January 2015 local radio was announcing that he had returned to the senior panel after leaving it the year before, a boost for the county ahead of that season. He was playing with Carlow IT at the time, so he missed the pre-season O'Byrne Cup games.
The stain on the sheet is from 2019. After a Division 3 loss to Down, he was handed a 12-week suspension over his conduct towards the referee, along with a coach and the manager, who got 20 weeks. Croke Park's appeals body upheld the bans in May 2019. That is a sporting disciplinary matter rather than a court case, and it is the sort of heat-of-the-moment stuff a lot of players cop.
On the harm check, we found nothing: no comments about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the planet, no culture-war posts, and no work with people who push that stuff. That says as much about how little he talks outside football as it does about him, so treat it as a clean pass on a short file.
We also could not verify any big charity work or standout kind acts, and some pages we tried were blocked or returned the wrong story. A 2026 report about him leaving the Carlow panel appeared in searches, but we could not open it, so we are not saying more about it.
