Do we like Bhuvan Bam?
Our score: 7 out of 10. Decent record and real giving, but one old controversy over remarks about women, and the record on bigger issues is thin.
Bhuvan Bam is the Delhi kid who turned a phone camera and a knack for playing every character himself into one of India's biggest YouTube careers. At a summit this September he told the story of the early days, when police grabbed him by the collar in a Delhi market and he had to show them his own videos to prove who he was. Fame came quick, and it clearly kept him grounded enough to laugh about it.
The one real stain is from 2022. A video drew criticism over remarks about women from the hills, and the National Commission for Women asked Delhi Police to register a case. He apologised and said he never meant to hurt anyone. That is one incident, not a pattern, and he owned it, so it earns an asterisk rather than a fail.
On the harm check, the search came back clean. Nothing turned up of him attacking LGBTQ+ people, pushing anti-vax or climate-denial claims, or platforming anyone who does. His recent big projects are mainstream streaming work, including a Nikkhil Advani period series. The record is thin on big political issues, and that is the honest limit of the check.
The recent drama has him as the target. In April the Delhi High Court backed his suit over deepfakes and knock-off merch, ordering Google, Flipkart, Spotify and Meta to remove specific content. These were interim orders, and the court parked the parody defences for later. Annoying for him, but it is a bloke protecting his own face, not a scandal.
The good stuff is real. In March 2020 he gave a month of YouTube earnings, reported as Rs 10 lakh, to Covid relief, saying the country needed everyone right then. He then used a Titu Talks episode to fund food and rations for slum dwellers, with money also going to groups including the transgender community, and he spread the credit around.
So would we back him? Mostly yes. He has no harmful words on record and a decent history of helping people, and the one blemish was apologised for. Keep an eye on whether he ever speaks up for the community, because on that the record is silent.
