Do we like Basketmouth?

Our score: 6 out of 10. A decent record with one real stain and a messy feud, though the reporting I could open is thin.

Basketmouth is Bright Okpocha, one of Nigeria's best-known stand-up comedians. He has branched into music, acting and a web series, and he's a fixture on African comedy stages and UK tours. Nothing new and newsy turned up on him in recent months, so this is more career read than breaking goss.

The biggest stain is old. In 2014 he posted a joke on Facebook that critics read as promoting rape, which drew heavy condemnation online. In 2019 the EU dropped him as an ambassador for its campaign against sexual and gender-based violence after Nigerians flagged the joke. He apologised on Instagram, saying he'd meant it as satire and that it had hurt women.

On the harm test, that joke is the one real mark I found, and he has owned it. He said he took no payment for the EU campaign and saw it as a fight for the future of girls. I found no reporting of him attacking LGBTQ+ people, pushing conspiracy theories or backing climate denial, though my search on that front was thin, so treat it as a lean-yes, not a clean bill.

The other long-running drama is his feud with fellow comic AY Makun. In 2023 AY said Basketmouth had passed him gig work and then left him unpaid for one event, and Basketmouth had earlier denied they were ever friends. He posted an apology video saying “I just want us to live in peace and harmony.” He also admitted his upcoming show might have prompted it. Comedian Destalker has alleged that Basketmouth ignored and blacklisted him, and the article says Basketmouth neither accepted nor denied the allegations.

Lately he's been in the public conversation as an older-brother voice. In November 2025 he publicly urged Senator Ned Nwoko to settle a very public marital dispute privately and with maturity. His line was “Senator, you are an elder. If nobody will tell you, I will.” Fans will read that as speaking up, and others will say it was an unasked-for pile-on, so where you land is your call.

On the good stuff, I could only find a passing report that he launched the Bright Okpocha Foundation and visited a children's hospital in Lagos, and I couldn't open that page, so I'm not leaning on it. That's honestly thin. Overall he's a lean yes: a performer who has copped criticism, said sorry, and kept working, with no pattern of harm in the sources I could read.
