Do we like Bang Chan?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A decent record and regular real giving, marked down for one old misstep and because the sources on his views were thin.
Bang Chan is the leader of Stray Kids, one of K-pop's biggest groups, and profile pieces describe him as the Sydney-raised member who moved to Korea to train. He is also the main producer behind the group's sound, working with bandmates Changbin and Han as the in-house trio 3RACHA. The group is not a manufactured product in the usual sense: they write and produce much of their own music.
The main stain is old. In 2021 a years-old video resurfaced of him copying a pose from Childish Gambino's This Is America, and it drew criticism online. He apologised publicly through the fan app Bubble and said the group did not support discrimination. Fans were split between those who called it ignorance and those who wanted more, and nothing similar has turned up since.
On the harm check, the record is thin rather than bad. I found no statements from him against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or climate science, and no stints in culture-war media or films with people who push that stuff. His recent work is Stray Kids albums and a world tour with his own bandmates. I also found nothing from him on trans rights either way, so call that a gap, not a tick.
On how he treats people, the picture is mostly warm. In September 2026 Korean press reported he rebuked a fan who kicked a bandmate's suitcase at an airport, asking if they were ashamed. That is a bloke holding fans to account for their behaviour, not a scandal.
The giving is the real stuff. For years he has marked his birthday with donations: 100 million won in 2024, and in 2026 a 100 million won UNICEF gift for flood-hit children in Nepal and then 300 million won across three groups, including an ocean-conservation charity. Putting money behind the planet and kids, year after year, counts for something.
So where do we land? He is not perfect, but the one real mark is old and was owned. The company and the conduct are clean, and the giving is steady. It's a yes from us, with a small asterisk and a note that we'd love to hear him say more on queer rights.
