Do we like Bae Doona?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A clean record and a career built on socially minded roles, but little on the record in her own words about LGBTQ+ people or the planet, so it stops short of the top.
Bae Doona is one of South Korea's most respected actors. She broke out in Bong Joon-ho's Barking Dogs Never Bite and Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and later crossed over with Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending and the Netflix series Sense8. She spent years doing art-house films in Korea before the international work arrived.
The scandal section is short, because there isn't one. Searches for lawsuits, court cases, accusations and controversy turned up nothing credible about her. The only 'scandal' pages were gossip sites that contradicted themselves, so we've left them out. Several results were about Bae Suzy, a different person.
On the harm test, there are no comments on LGBTQ+ people, women, vaccines or the planet that anyone has flagged. She isn't tied to the culture-war circuit or to projects that platform it. Her recent work runs through Korean cinema and the Wachowskis' queer-friendly Sense8, which she was part of. That's the company she's kept, not a statement of her own views, and we won't claim views she hasn't voiced.
Her politics show up in the roles she picks. She told Asia Economy that she took Next Sohee, a film about a young worker's death, straight away after reading the script. She said overworked people deserve more respect, and asked whether that story is limited to Korea: “In this era, in a capitalist society, wouldn't this happen anywhere?”
Nothing new on her lately, scandal-wise. In January 2026 she was named one of seven jurors for the Berlin film festival, only the third Korean to get the gig after Lee Young-ae and Bong Joon-ho. She's also lined up for the Zellner brothers' sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang.
The good stuff is mostly craft and attitude. In 2025 she said her priority is the success of the project, not standing out. She told the Korea Times: “Anyone who works with me will likely find it hard to dislike me.” That's her own claim, but no one has come forward to dispute it.
