Do we like Ariel Henry?
Our score: 5 out of 10. Nothing harmful turned up in his own words, but the unresolved questions around the Moïse case and his unelected rule leave him in the middle.
Before politics, Henry was a doctor. A Haitian Times piece headlined him as the physician who led Haiti's cholera response when he was tapped for prime minister, and that public-health background is the best part of his CV. It's a different story from the usual career politician.
He landed the top job in July 2021 after a power struggle with Claude Joseph, in the chaos after President Jovenel Moïse was killed. He was never elected to it, which shaped everything that followed.
The messy bit started within weeks. Haiti's chief prosecutor, Bed-Ford Claude, alleged that Henry had phone calls in the early hours after the killing with a suspect, Joseph Badio, and asked a judge to charge him. Henry rejected what he called “diversionary tactics” and then sacked the prosecutor. Legal experts said the prosecutor lacked authority over a case already with an investigating judge. We found no charge against Henry in what we read, and the claim remains an allegation.
Then came the elections. Henry dismissed the electoral council by decree, saying its members “cannot organise elections”, which pushed the planned vote and constitutional referendum off indefinitely. He said he wanted “restoration of democracy through elections”, and he was also accused of obstructing justice over the sacked prosecutor, which he denied. Critics read it as digging in, and supporters as fixing a broken body.
On the harm test, we came up empty in a good way: nothing in his own words or acts against LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants or the climate, and no pattern of working with people who push harm. To be fair, the coverage we could read is mostly about governance and the gang crisis, so it's a thin record rather than a glowing one.
His exit was grim. Gangs closed in while he was abroad in Kenya and he couldn't get home. He resigned in April 2024 as a transitional council took over, and Michel Patrick Boisvert became interim prime minister. Nothing new on him lately: we found no fresh news about Henry himself in 2026.
