Do we like Anthony Hopkins?
Our score: 8 out of 10. A long, decent career with nothing harmful on the record, held back a notch by one dismissive set of remarks that drew criticism.
On the court record, there's nothing here. Searches for convictions, lawsuits and allegations against the actor turned up no case that went against him. The only legal item was an old unpaid-fee suit he filed against Merchant Ivory, which I couldn't date, and the other results were about different men with the same name. Tabloid-territory clickbait about a supposed portrait scandal didn't hold up either.
On the harm test, the thing that stuck was his Nov 2025 memoir press. Asked about a suggestion from his wife, he called neurodivergent labels “nonsense” and said they were fashion. The ADHD Foundation said he was entitled to his view but called it deeply unhelpful, since it could put people off seeking support. That's a dismissive take, not a campaign, and it's the only mark I found.
I also searched for anything on LGBTQ+ people, women, vaccines, climate and migrants and found no harmful words from him. On politics, in July 2024 he told Deadline he was “shocked and appalled” at what he'd heard about Donald Trump's repeated praise of Hannibal Lecter. That's a reaction to one set of remarks, not a statement of party allegiance. I couldn't check his recent film company in detail, so call that a gap.
