Do we like Anne Curtis?

Our score: 8 out of 10. A long record of speaking up for LGBTQ+ rights, women and kids' causes, and no harmful words or company turned up; the record we could read is mostly Philippine press.

Anne was born in Yarrawonga, Victoria, to a Filipina mum and an Australian dad. She did primary school in Australia, then moved to the Philippines. She made her film debut at 12 in 1997, signed with Viva and GMA, and jumped to ABS-CBN in 2004. From there she became one of the country's biggest TV and film names.

The big stoush of 2026 wasn't of her making. During a House Justice Committee hearing on impeachment complaints in March, Quezon City Rep. Bong Suntay made remarks about seeing her at a hotel, which she called vulgar and sexualised. His comments were struck from the record. He apologised in general terms, and she answered that she did not accept his non-apology, though she did accept his wife's.

On the harm test, she comes up well. In 2018 she tagged senators on Instagram and urged them to back the SOGIE Equality Bill, saying she wanted her LGBTQIA team members to have equal rights. In 2022 she publicly endorsed Leni Robredo for president, which is her own choice and her own post. We found no harmful words from her and no questionable company, though we read mostly Philippine press.

The fallout kept going. In July it emerged that the Supreme Court had told Suntay and lawyer Ferdinand Topacio to explain why they shouldn't be disbarred over sexist remarks about her, and the House ordered Suntay to do gender-sensitivity training, community service and a televised apology. As of that report neither man had responded. In June she also steered clear of the pageant 'halfie' row, saying only that her identity goes beyond a label and that she is proud to be Filipino.

On the good stuff, she is a UNICEF Philippines Goodwill Ambassador. A 2021 birthday fundraiser of hers raised 1.8 million pesos for health and nutrition programs for children in their first 1,000 days. That is a lot of effort for something that doesn't make her look good, and it's on the record.

So: a big star, a long career, and a person who used a nasty moment to say something useful for every woman who has been talked about like a prop. The record is thin on how she treats staff, so that test is a pass rather than a flourish. Nothing in what we read suggests anything but a decent person.
