Do we like Angelina Jolie?

Our score: 8 out of 10. Two decades of refugee work and a record of speaking up, with one hotly contested position on Gaza and little on record about LGBTQ+ issues.

Jolie is Hollywood royalty by birth, but the second act is what defines her. She joined the UN refugee agency UNHCR as a goodwill ambassador in 2001 and was its special envoy from 2012. By the time she left in December 2022 she had made more than 60 field trips, including Yemen and Ukraine that final year.

Her exit was her own call. She said it was “time for me to work differently,” engaging directly with refugees and local groups, and the agency's chief thanked her. That's the opposite of a celebrity cashing in on a cause; she stayed on the work after the title went.

Her public statements stand out for speaking against power. In late 2023 she posted about Gaza, describing a bombing of “a trapped population” and saying world leaders were complicit for not demanding a ceasefire. Where you land depends on whether you read that as a humanitarian plea for civilians or as one-sided; Jon Voight, her father, publicly rebuked her over it.

In January 2026 she visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, meeting Red Crescent volunteers and truck drivers moving aid, and said she was honoured to meet them. Neither she nor Egypt issued a statement about the trip. It's the kind of unglamorous visit she's been doing for years.

On the harm check, nothing nasty turned up: no slide into conspiracy theories, no campaigning against anyone's rights. In September 2025 at San Sebastián she said she didn't recognise her country, and warned that limiting expression was dangerous. A White House spokesman responded by calling Jimmy Kimmel a “low ratings loser”. To be straight, though, searches found little either way on her record about LGBTQ+ people specifically, so it's a pass on what's there, not on a long paper trail.

The mess is her split from Brad Pitt. A 2022 court filing by Jolie alleged abuse on a 2016 flight; Pitt's representative strongly denied it, and the FBI said it would not pursue further investigation. The Miraval winery fight is a separate business stoush that is still going, with a June 2026 ruling going Pitt's way on testimony; the divorce itself was finalised in December 2024.
