Do we like Angela Bassett?
Our score: 7 out of 10. A long, respected career, an honorary Oscar and no harmful words or acts found, but the public record on her causes is thinner than we'd like.
Angela Bassett has been in the game for decades. The Academy called her work "transcendent" in announcing its honorary award, and she'd already earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She's the sort of actor whose name on a poster means the thing is worth watching.
The Academy gave her an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in January 2024. She noted she was only the second Black actress to receive one, after Cicely Tyson, and used the speech to praise the Black actresses who came before her and those working now. Her closing line was “When we stand together, we win together.”
The nearest thing to a scandal is the 2023 Oscars, when she lost to Jamie Lee Curtis and her reaction went viral. Years later she told Oprah Winfrey on OWN that it was “a supreme disappointment”, and that she had wanted to handle it very well. That's a human moment, not a character flaw.
On the harm check, we searched her name against LGBTQ+, women, race, migrants, vaccines and climate, and checked her recent work. We found no harmful statements, campaigns or dodgy company. We also found no court cases or reported accusations against her. Your own check should note that she hasn't said much on trans rights in anything we could read, so we can't point to specific advocacy there.
Nothing new on her lately in the way of news or controversy. The most recent item we found was the American Black Film Festival announcing in January 2026 that she would receive its Excellence in the Arts Award. She's still working both on screen and behind the camera.
So: would we support her? Yes. She's a gifted, respected actor with a clean record and a habit of lifting others up. The only reason this isn't a top score is that the reporting we could read says little about her causes, so we're not going to invent a halo for her.
