Do we like Alex Gonzaga?

Our score: 7 out of 10. No harmful words or campaigning turned up, and there's real charity work, but a 2023 stoush and unanswered claims from ex-colleagues keep it from a nine.

Alex Gonzaga is a Filipino actress, host and YouTuber who came up in the shadow, and then alongside, her big sister Toni. She built her own brand on comedy and self-deprecating vlogs, which is why her slips tend to go viral fast.

The big one was January 2023, when a video went viral of her smearing icing on a waiter's face at her birthday party. Her camp said the waiter was a longtime friend of her mother and it was playful banter between people who know each other well. Plenty of people online weren't buying it.

Within a day she posted her own apology on Instagram, saying sorry to the waiter by name and to her family. She called the night a lesson in “Humility, kindness and better judgment.” Owning it that fast counts for something, and it's more than a lot of famous people manage.

The video also dragged up older claims. Coconuts Manila reported that several former colleagues and crew from past productions alleged she was rude and dismissive to people who weren't big names. At the time of that report no response from her camp had been published, and we found nothing since that settles it either way.

On the harm check, we came up empty in a good way. Nothing we found has her pushing anti-LGBTQ+ lines, anti-vax claims, climate denial or campaigning against anyone's rights. The closest thing is a 2018 Japan holiday caption, “sagot sa kahirapan” (the answer to poverty), which some called tactless; she said it was a joke.

On the good side, she handed out relief goods to families in her hometown during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, and reports say she has helped people finish school. It's not a charity empire, but it's real and it's been consistent enough to notice.
