Do we like Akemi Okamura?

Our score: 6 out of 10. No harm or bad behaviour found in the coverage, but there is also very little public record on her views to go on.

Akemi Okamura is a Japanese voice actress, and if you have watched anime in the last 30 years you have probably heard her. She is the voice of Nami in One Piece, Fio in Studio Ghibli's Porco Rosso, and Risa Koizumi in Lovely Complex.

The reason she is in the news is Detective Conan. She started voicing Ran Mouri with the episode that aired on 14 March 2026, stepping in for Wakana Yamazaki. In May, Anime News Network reported that she would take over the role. That is a big seat to fill in a long-running show.

On scandals, there is honestly nothing to tell. We searched for lawsuits, allegations and public blow-ups in both English and Japanese, and the coverage we could read carries none. The Anime News Network and Toy People stories are about casting, not controversy.

On the harm check, we found no statements from her about LGBTQ+ people, women, migrants, vaccines or the climate, good or bad. We also found no campaigning, donations or causes in her name. Her work is voicing characters in big family-friendly franchises, and nothing in the coverage ties her to anyone pushing harm. A clean sheet here means a quiet record rather than a loud one.

In March 2024 she received the Kei Tomiyama/Kazue Takahashi Awards at the Seiyu Awards, which Anime News Network describes as an award for voice actors who have been active in every field including acting. It is peer recognition for a career that began in the early 1990s, not a charity record, and we found no charity work to report either way.

So where does that leave us? Nothing nasty, nothing contested, and a long career playing beloved characters. We would be doing you a disservice to call her a hero on this evidence, because we cannot see enough of her own words or deeds to say. A cautious yes is the honest answer.
